The car workshop and garage

Flashback to the 1950s

Do you recall these iconic cars?
The post-World War II brought great technological novelties to the automotive industry. Air conditioning, automatic transmission, power steering, and seat belts, just to name a few. Probably some of them were driven by lawyers, but they would be far from imagining that this workshop would be the headquarters of VdA - Vieira de Almeida, one of the largest law firms in Portugal.

Especially for Aston Martin fans, the DB3S model made its Le Mans debut in 1952, exhibiting its full potential as a competitive racer.

20th-century office workplaces

The one-size-fits-all workplace of the time

In the 1950s, an office's architecture was mostly based on the number of workers, and the more they could fit, the better. There was no worry in designing leisure areas or break-out meeting spaces. And yes, you could smoke almost anywhere.

The Cone of Silence

In the 1960s, some of the greatest innovations in business communication were demonstrated by Maxwell Smart in the famous Get Smart series. But who took him seriously?

"Make it simple, but significant."

Don Draper, from Mad Men TV Series

The MAd Men TV series reflects the corporate offices of the 1960’s, where executive offices lined the external perimeter of a floor plan, depriving internal areas of natural light.

Different gears and architecture

Start your engines!

In 2014, the former car workshop was already part of the past, and the architectural project for the new office of VdA - Vieira de Almeida began to take shape and form.

"God created paper for the purpose of drawing architecture on it. Everything else is, at least for me, an abuse of paper."

Alvar Aalto, Finnish Architect

Seat belts on… Go!

The old car garage and workshop has now given way to a modern office building. This award-winning rehabilitation project brought to life a rich palette of textures, tonalities, and shapes, into an environment of proximity and collaboration that reflects the culture of VdA - Vieira de Almeida.

Reshaping the Experience of the Workspace

Three informal meeting spaces, a 140-seat auditorium, a library, an art gallery, 23 meeting rooms, a music studio, a medical facility, and 157 offices for 380 jobs.
