The car garage

Flashback to the mid 20th century

Do you remember these classic cars?
The post-World War II brought great technological novelties to the automotive industry. Air conditioning, automatic transmission, power steering and seat belts, just to name a few. Probably some of them were driven by lawyers, but they would be far from imagining that this garage would be the VdA - Vieira de Almeida headquarter.

Especially for Aston Martin fans, the DB3S model made its Le Mans debut in 1952 and quickly showed potential as a competitive racer.

20th century office workplaces

the One-size-fits-all workplace

At the mid 20th century, the office's workplace architecture was based on the number of people. And the more they fit the better. There was no worry of designing common leisure or break out meeting spaces. And yes, you could smoke everywhere.

The Cone of Silence

In the 1960s, some of the greatest innovations in business communication were invented by Maxwell Smart in the famous Get Smart TV series. But nobody took him seriously...

"Make it simple but significant"

Don Draper, from Mad Men TV series

The MAd Men TV series reflects the corporate offices from the 1960’s, where male-dominated executive offices line the external perimeter of the floor plate, depriving the internal spaces of any real natural light.

Start engines

In 2014, the car garage was already part of the history and the architecture project for the new office of VdA - Vieira de Almeida starts.

"God created paper for the purpose of drawing architecture on it. Everything else is, at least for me, an abuse of paper."

Alvar Aalto, architect

Seat belts on… go!

Welcome

The old car garage has now given way to a modern office building. This award winning urban rehabilitation project uncovered the rich palette of textures, tonalities and shapes and gave way to a space of proximity and collaboration that reflects the culture of VdA - Vieira de Almeida.
