The name Nanban Jin, meaning “southern barbarians,” pays homage to the arrival of the Portuguese in Japan — a meeting point for rich cultural exchange. This chair captures the essence of shared traditions and skills, with armrests echoing the elegant, curved roofs of Japanese temples.

Crafted with a deep commitment to sustainability and quality, the Nanban Jin showcases local materials like burnt oak, finished using the traditional shou-sugi-ban technique, and natural leather. Its standardized slats and streamlined design of clean, vertical and horizontal lines minimize waste and celebrate timeless craftsmanship.
We are also thrilled to share that the Nanban Jin lounge chair was recently honored as a finalist in the Architect’s Chair competition, marking its place in design excellence.
