Recognising the emblematic value of this building, the intervention aimed to preserve its memory while addressing the urgent need for improvements and modernisation. The building’s rehabilitation is essential for maintaining its architectural heritage and the collective memory of the place.
The new façade solution incorporates vertical and horizontal fins, with variable alignments that depend on the solar exposure. The platform on the two lower floors is supporting the upper office tower.
When we enter the building, the double-height ceiling of the main lobby creates a very comfortable and spacious area. The lighting and architectural elements (such as the opaque screens on both levels or the existing artistic mural) transform the double-height ceiling into a perfect and more human scale.
The project will utilise sustainable solutions – including materials and technology – to minimise the building’s environmental impact and enhance energy efficiency. Around the building, located on different levels, we can find terraces that serve as exterior and unique leisure areas. The rooftop offers an exclusive 360-degree view of Porto and the Douro River.
