People@Openbook - A closer look at L(ABC)erâmica, Openbook LAB’s current workshop.

The main objective of L(ABC)êramica is to develop technical and creative skills in shaping forms and objects — something that directly connects architecture and modelling space.

Just as the project images, or even the physical experience we have of spaces, stimulate and influence our designs, the development of our manual skills also contributes to the creative design process. If we consider that our body is essentially what gives scale and meaning to space, then the need to explore our sensitivity and manual creativity with different materials becomes evident.

Exploring their possibilities for transformation, texture, proportions, and relationships with light and colour. By developing these skills, we gain a broader understanding of materials and their behaviour, incorporating this knowledge into the design process, adding depth and value to it. Clays and glazes have been an excellent foundation for this exploration and learning. This hands-on exploration of ceramics strengthens both technical and creative skills, bridging craftsmanship and architectural thinking.

Ana Salvado, one of the initiative’s coordinators, shares her perspective on how this workshop refines spatial awareness and enhances the design process: “The main objective of L(ABC)erâmica is to develop both technical and creative skills in shaping forms and objects—an exercise that directly connects architecture with spatial modelling. Just as project references or our physical experience of spaces influence and inspire design, so too does the development of manual skills play a vital role in the creative process. Since our bodies define scale and give meaning to space, exploring our sensitivity and manual creativity through different materials becomes essential. This hands-on approach allows us to experiment with transformation, texture, proportion, and the relationship of light and colour -key aspects of architectural design. By refining these skills, we gain a deeper understanding of materials and their behaviour, enriching our design process and adding depth to our work. Clay and glazes, in particular, have been an excellent foundation for this exploration, allowing us to push creative boundaries and expand our architectural thinking.
